We all love to receive a gift hamper, filled to the brim with lovely treats that we may never otherwise think to purchase. It’s a great way to show someone how much you care, as well as the perfect way to taste delicacies from areas far and wide that we may never have had the opportunity to visit.

So where did the idea of a gift hamper come from? We take a brief journey through its history, with a little look at some of the amazing hampers that we can provide here at Fine Scottish Hampers!

The tradition of giving hampers was brought over to England from France, by William the Conqueror in the 11th century. They were originally given as charity, to poor families who were in need of food and clothing. The word hamper is taken from the French word hanapier, which means ‘a case for goblets.’

During the Victorian age hampers started to gain popularity as a gift, on occasions such as Christmas. This was generally for wealthy families who could afford to fill the baskets, although some rich employers would gift a smaller hamper to trusted members of staff. The development of the railways in the 1800s saw a big rise in the gifting of hampers, allowing for them to be delivered around the country, with less risk of the contents going stale or mouldy. Similar gifts were delivered across America, although they were commonly known as gift baskets, as they still are today.

During World War One hampers, or care packages as they were known, were sent from families at home to their loved ones on the front line and to injured soldiers in the hospital. They were not wicker hampers, but were boxes filled with as many home comforts as possible to make the bleak war conditions seem a little more bearable.

In the present day, gift hampers are more popular than ever. It feels wonderful to receive one, but it also feels good  to choose which hampers to give to friends and family. Deciding whether to go for a pre-made hamper or creating your own, with handpicked items that you think they will enjoy, is all part of the fun!
