Hogmanay for those that are unfamiliar with the name, is the Scottish word for the last day of the year and is synonymous with the New Year's Eve celebrations enjoyed around the world. The custom traditionally involves friends, family and neighbours all getting together and distributing gifts, drink and and some of the finest foods that Scotland has to offer. These celebrations then last long into the early hours of New Year's Day, after the strike of midnight marks the start of the New Year. Many different areas of Scotland have developed their own local customs to welcome in the New Year and make Hogmanay a true celebration. From the central areas of Scotland throwing parties and dancing long into the night, to the famous Fireball ceremony of Stovehaven, Aberdeenshire, Hogmanay is a celebration that makes the whole of Scotland come alive.

A traditional Hogmanay evening may not be as unfamiliar to the rest of the world as you may think, the classic Auld Lange Syne song that many sing when the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve is actually a poem written by the famous Scottish Poet Robert Burns. It is now a custom in many countries to link arms with each other and sing the song to welcome in the New Year and send your best wishes to everyone. After the celebrations have ended, it is traditional for the “first foot” back into the home after midnight to be carrying gifts such as shortbread or whisky, to help bring good luck for the year ahead.
